Period drama and the devil

I was watching the first two episodes of The White Queen. The first episode involves paganism: the queen-to-be, Elizabeth Woodville, cuts two strands and pulls back the third, finding at its end a ring shaped like a crown. The next episode involves Christianity: Margaret Beaufort, one of Woodville's many rivals, receives a sign from the Crucified Christ that her son will have a destiny.

We're seeing this film from Woodville's standpoint. We're supposed to be rooting for her, and therefore for paganism. We are being conditioned here to see Henry VII Tudor as the villain. By extension we are supposed to be rooting against God.

It's one of many subtle ways that popular-culture conditions people, in this case women, against Christianity - and toward paganism.
