The community organisers win again

Tom Holland gets threats from Muslims:

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "Having taken security advice, we have reluctantly cancelled a planned [private] screening of the programme Islam: The Untold Story. We remain extremely proud of the film which is still available to view on 4oD."

For "security advice", read "Muslim threats". Given that the date on the article is 9/11 (in American notation), I take it that the threats were indeed serious. The article also cites some of that community's community-organisers. They are, here, the hilariously-titled "The Islamic Education and Research Academy". Yeah. "Academy'.

Now, this Islam: The Untold Story screening wasn't the screening that everyone saw on Chan4. This was to be a semiprivate affair - Holland screening a copy amongst some (unnamed) scholars of Islam, who would then add their comments for the DVD. Chan4 and Holland didn't invite Robert Spencer or Ibn Warraq (as far as I know). But they may have invited Brits like Robert Hoyland and Gerald Hawting - giants in this field who would have brought some excellent points to bear, for or against.

But thanks to the iERA - which I'm guessing is just the latest mutation of Abu Hamza, Anjem Choudary, and "the community" - we're not going to have that symposium and we're not going to get to hear what Orientalist scholars have to say about Holland's work.
