A look back at Vesta

The Dawn spacecraft sent back to Earth news that Vesta has hydrated rocks. Glenn Reynolds the Instapundit is linking to the Popular Mechanics article, "Even the Asteroid Belt Has Water". The 'pundit calls this "good news".

Contra Popular Mechanics, the news isn't that the Belt has watery planetoids. The snow-line runs right through it. It's long been assumed that the outer asteroids like Ceres are watery. Reynolds at least probably knows this.

The good news is that Vesta has water. It's inside the snowline and is moreover a terrestrial planet in miniature. If it has water, that opens up possibilities for Mars. It also means it'll be less of a hassle to set up bases on these inner, drier planetoids.
