The Sura of New Orleans
Pace Andrew Sullivan, I agree with some of those who are declaring the latest destruction to be an act of God. The section to which Sullivan objects are defining it as vengeance upon the personal sins of the New Orleans electorate.
I need hardly reiterate the constant warnings (one of which came as late as last year). The people of New Orleans knew that this day would come; Michael Ledeen says much the same about today's towns around Vesuvius in Italy.
So the Kuwaitis turn out to be right about the theodicy of this event but wrong about how Allah made His decision. The disaster had nothing to do with the American government's perceived offenses against Islam. (I'd further argue that it doesn't have anything else to do with the federal government; Louisiana wasn't paying its share of the nation's dues and it's not the out-of-state taxpayer's responsibility to keep any given city afloat.) It was another of Allah's decrees which the qawm of New Orleans had transgressed, that of surat Hud:
36. And it was revealed to Noah - 'None of your people will believe except those who have believed already. So be not sad because of what they used to do.
In short, Thou Shalt Not Fasten Thine Ass Below Sea Level. Even an atheist can't argue with that.
