Handicapping 2008

Fred Barnes thinks that Republicans will have it rough in 2008.

Three of his arguments are that the Republican field is weak, that the Dems can clean up their act, and that the mainstream media will have an effect.

I don't think the Republican field is so bad, if the frontrunners today plan for two years down the line. And from where I sit, the MSM didn't succeed in 2004, and is continuing its downward slide as we speak.

While few of Fred Barnes's arguments apply right now, all five will apply should a sensible Democrat run; by which I mean, someone like Phil Bredesen of Tennesee or perhaps Bill White the mayor of Houston. Not Kerry, not Edwards, and absolutely positively not Hillary Rodham Clinton.
