The hibernating RINO
Tache Bolton can't become UN ambassador, because a key member of the Senate committee in charge of his appointment didn't show up. Check this out:
The tide turned when Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich (news, bio, voting record) spoke for the first time. He did not attend Bolton's two-day confirmation hearing last week but had been presumed to be a supporter. "I don't feel comfortable voting today," Voinovich said. ... After the meeting, Voinovich said he had planned to support Bolton but changed his mind after an impassioned critique from Sen. Christopher Dodd (news, bio, voting record), D-Conn. Voinovich said he does not fear retribution from the White House, which had counted on solid Republican support on the committee. "The passion on the other side on this, I don't think is political," Voinovich told reporters. "I think they raised some legitimate issues. I think we ought to find out what they are. I think we ought to get the information, get a chance to have (the allegations) rebutted," Voinovich said.
Voinovich's rationale is that he doesn't have enough information. He had the opportunity of the last week to get this information, or at the very least to raise a fuss about not getting it. But until now, when it mattered, this man couldn't be bothered.
This is one of the most egregious displays of disrespect for one's own Party, Senate, and Nation I've seen this side of John Kerry. And no, I don't mean that as a compliment.
I don't know Bolton and I can't stand the UN. Therefore I don't particularly care if Bolton gets to be the ambassador or not. But Voinovich's behavior is inexcusable. Has Voinovich proposed anyone else to take on that den of thieves and thugs on Turtle Bay? No? Then why the obstruction?
Voinovich knows he can get away with it because (1) "moderate" grandstanding gets good MSM coverage and (2) DC Republicans like Dubya will suck it up like the chumps they are, as they did with Specter last year.
Someone needs to mock up some anti-UN commercials and play 'em around rural Ohio. Let the people who (mistakenly) elected him know who makes up Voinovich's real constituency.
